Egypt backs Sudan truce, rejects parallel entities in talks with UN envoy

Egypt’s foreign minister on Saturday reaffirmed support for a humanitarian truce in Sudan while rejecting any attempts to create parallel entities in the war-torn country.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty made the remarks during talks on Saturday with Ramtane Lamamra, Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for Sudan, on the sidelines of the African Union summit in Addis Ababa.

At the start of the meeting, Abdelatty outlined Egypt’s firm position on the Sudan crisis: support for Sudan’s unity and territorial integrity, preservation of its national institutions, and rejection of any efforts to undermine its sovereignty, divide the country or establish parallel governing bodies.

He also voiced support for a temporary humanitarian truce leading to a permanent ceasefire, aimed at creating conditions for a political transition that meets the Sudanese people’s aspirations for security, stability and development.

Abdelatty praised coordination with the UN envoy and highlighted shared positions backing the Sudanese state amid threats to its security and stability.

He specifically welcomed the outcomes of the fifth consultative meeting to coordinate peace efforts, hosted by Cairo on January 14, describing it as a successful example of cooperation between Egypt and the United Nations in advancing a political settlement.

The two sides reviewed Egypt’s recent contacts within the Quad mechanism and exchanged views on breaking the current deadlock and moving the political process forward.

They also discussed efforts to mobilize humanitarian funding, including a recent meeting in Washington, and considered next steps on the Sudan file.

Egypt reiterated its readiness to provide all necessary support to facilitate the UN envoy’s efforts to develop serious and sustainable solutions to the crisis.
