Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, Prime Minister, issued a decree declaring Thursday, January 29, 2026, a paid official holiday in observance of the January 25 Revolution Day and Police Day.
The holiday applies to employees of ministries, government departments, public authorities, local administration units, public sector companies, public business sector companies, as well as private sector companies. Examinations, if any, will proceed as scheduled by the competent authorities.
The decision stipulates that the holiday on Thursday, January 29, 2026, shall replace Sunday, January 25, 2026.
The reason January 25 is Police Day in Egypt dates back to 1952 when 50 policemen were killed and 80 were wounded in Ismailia by the British colonization. The massacre was the spark of the revolution that ended the monarchy in Egypt on July 23 of the same year.
It also comes to coincide with the January 25 Revolution that took to the streets in 2011, demanding the overthrow of Mubarak’s regime in a series of mass protests that broke out in several Arab countries.
