Hisham Badawi, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Egypt’s lower house of parliament, adjourned the House’s second plenary session after hearing speeches by several lawmakers regarding President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s request for parliamentary authorization to take defensive measures in support of Saudi Arabia, should the Kingdom request such assistance.
Badawi called on lawmakers to reconvene next Monday at 11 a.m. to continue deliberations.
The session focused on continuing discussions of the presidential request in accordance with the constitutional and procedural requirements governing the deployment of Egyptian armed forces on combat missions outside the country’s borders.
Article 152 of the Egyptian Constitution stipulates that the National Defense Council must be consulted and that approval by a two-thirds majority of the House of Representatives is required before the armed forces can be deployed on a combat mission outside the country.
