Egypt reaffirmed its firm commitment to the one-China principle and opposition to interference in China’s internal affairs in a joint statement between the two countries on Wednesday.

The statement, issued after talks between President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and China’s President Xi Jinping in Cairo, affirmed that Taiwan is an inalienable part of the territory of the People’s Republic of China.

Egypt also expressed support for China’s position on issues concerning its sovereignty and territorial integrity and backed efforts toward China’s reunification, according to the statement.

The two sides reaffirmed their firm mutual support on issues concerning each other’s core interests and major concerns.

For its part, China affirmed its recognition of the vital importance of the Nile River as Egypt’s main lifeline and affirmed Egypt’s legitimate right to protect its water and food security and development interests.

The two sides also called on all Nile Basin countries to abide by international law, including the obligation not to cause harm.

El-Sisi and Xi held official talks spanning bilateral relations, joint investments, and global and regional issues of mutual concern as Xi started a historic visit to Egypt on Tuesday.

The visit coincides with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries and marks Xi’s first visit to Egypt in 10 years.

Egypt was the first Arab and African country to recognize China and establish diplomatic relations with it in 1956.

The two presidents reviewed the significant progress in ties since the establishment of the comprehensive strategic partnership in 2014, according to the statement.

They exchanged views on regional and international issues of common interest, reaching broad consensus on a wide range of issues, the statement added.
